Lord Mayor’s Show — All You Need to Know

With the recent festivities encircling Lord Mayor’s Show of 2024, I thought it only appropriate to address the event with a short but concise write-up. Keep reading to find out why thousands of Londoners turn up to watch the spectacle!

What’s the purpose of the show?

The Lord Mayor’s Show is an event that dates back to the 13th century. Initially held in 1215, the purpose of the show is to celebrate the newly elected Lord Mayor of London. The day itself marks the Lord Mayor’s first full day in office.

In all fairness, it’s a bit of a silly concept where the newly elected mayor travels — or marches — to Westminster to swear their loyalty to the Crown.

Why was it invented?

The show was invented to formalize the newly elected mayor’s allegiance to the monarch.

London actually didn’t have any mayors until 1215 when King John granted the City of London its right to select a new mayor annually. King John wasn’t too popular at the time, and hence, in an attempt to turn his disastrous reign around, Lord Mayor’s Show was invented. These civic privileges were a rare occurrence at the time.

Since 1215, the show has become a civic parade where thousands show up to celebrate London’s timeless resilience and community spirit.

When does the show start and end?

The show starts at 11:00 AM and ends roughly around 3:00 PM depending on your location.

Who’s the current Lord Mayor of London?

The current Lord Mayor of London is Alderman Alistair King of the Queenhithe Ward. He’s the 696th Lord Mayor of London with a term from November 8th 2024 set to conclude in November 2025.

For reference, Sadiq Khan is the current Mayor — not to be confused with Lord Mayor — of London.
